Ben Franklin and Curb Your Enthusiasm

It’s no big deal. Having said that, I want you to call Julia.”

I am currently on a quest for the world’s best joke. The only stipulation being it must be an original joke.

Now I have always found that Larry David’s humor appeals to me more than most comedic writers today.  This past season was great. One of my favorite bits was the observation of people who use the phrase,”Having said that.”

Currently I am reading The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin on Google Books. While always have found the genre to be narcissistic, what better way to understand a person than to read their writings.  Who knew this man had such a sense of humor? Larry David stealing from Ben Franklin?

Franklin’s Autobiography: page 5

“And lastly (I may as well confess it, since my denial of it will be believed by nobody), perhaps I shall a good deal gratify my own vanity. Indeed, I scarce ever heard or saw the introductory words, “Without vanity I may say,” etc., but some vain thing immediately followed.”

I may have to change my stipulations for world’s best joke after reading that. Another good book to check out on the topic is Stop Me If You’ve Heard This by Jim Holt.

Good jokes have longevity I guess.
